Tips For Choosing Exterior Paint Colors for Your Home
Most homes use at least 3 exterior paint colors, siding color, a contrast color for windows and trim and accent colors for shutters, railings, doors, etc. Choosing which combination can sometimes be confusing.
Use these tips to help choose the paint colors that best bring your style to life:
Look at Older Architecture in a More Modern Light
Using bright colors on old architectural details can produce startling and exciting results. It’s a good idea to look at what your neighbors are doing first. You want your house to look beautiful within its environment. A wildly bright house in a conservative neighborhood will seem awkward and out of place. Do your homework before you shop and save time and money.
Look To Mother Nature
Consider the landscaping around your house. Trees may suggest combinations of greens and browns. A beach setting lends itself to vivid blues, turquoises, and coral colors. Even the garden in your front yard can inspire exciting color combinations.
Let History Live
If you’re painting an older home, use a historically accurate color scheme. You can have old paint chips analyzed to recreate the same color. Or, you can refer to historic color charts and select shades that might have been used at the time your home was built.
Check the Roof
Some colors are already established in your home’s color scheme. What color is your roof? Your paint color should harmonize with your roof.
Work With What You Were Given
Every home has some features that will not be painted like brick walls and vinyl windows. Choose a color scheme that harmonizes with colors already present on your house.
Gather Inner Inspiration
Your goal is to harmonize. Make sure your color schemes are in harmony inside and out.
Light Colors Add Size
Light colors make a building look larger, and white is the favored color for traditional classical architecture. You can add to your home’s sense of size and dignity by using white or a pale cream color.
